Krysia Ara is an artist who specializes in mosaic and ceramic art while working in a variety of styles and mediums to keep things interesting. Krysia (pronounced "Kri-sha") has long been interested in developing technical expertise to create quality work that stands the test of time. For many years she sought out skilled mentors, traveling far and wide to attend workshops with renowned mosaic artists. As for ceramics, a passionate interest that combines well with mosaic, she is fortunate to live in an area teeming with ceramic artists, and has never had to travel far to expand her knowledge.
"Heron Sighting" is a public art mosaic installed in Dudley Park in Athens, Georgia in September, 2021. Ara says, "It was inspired by a memorable encounter with a great blue heron along Trail Creek. Through this mosaic, I did my best to create a special heron sighting experience for all park visitors!" The detailed handmade ceramic and glass mosaic was fabricated in the studio over the summer of 2021 and installed on the side of a new facilities building facing a picnic shelter with a gathering plaza in between. The charming ceramic heron is detailed down to the feather, containing elaborate ceramic objects carefully formed by hand, using a beautiful heron photograph as a model. The completed mosaic (10.5' x 4.5') was cut into a giant puzzle of coded pieces, which could then be transported and reassembled on-site. The project was supported by the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission and funded by Athens-Clarke County SPLOST.
In recent years, Krysia has become known in her Athens, GA community for installing public art mosaic projects. Notable projects include Project Ginkgo (with currently 17 ginkgo-themed mosaic light pole bases around downtown); "Flow Mosaic" seat walls of Cobbham Triangle Park; and mosaics at the remarkable Alice H. Richards Children's Garden at the UGA State Botanical Garden of Georgia.
