North Oconee River Greenway by Anna Forrester - 100 piece jigsaw puzzle
The North Oconee River Greenway is a linear park and alternate transportation route stretching 13 miles to the county's northern boundary - and is maintained and operated by the Trails and Open Space staff of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department. Beyond the trail the Greenway encompasses a corridor of natural spaces along the banks of the North Oconee that act as a natural buffer that improves water quality, secures the banks and surrounding area against erosion, as well as provides space, habitat, and migratory paths for many different species in an otherwise urban or suburban environment.
Among the many points of interest are the Charles Aguar Plaza (recognizing the "father of the Greenway system"), the site of the former Cook & Brothers Armory, the 32-acre Dudley Park, Firefly Trail including a stunning 500'-long bridge over the North Oconee River, the North Oconee River Park, Easley's Mill Overlook traveling the stretch of river that became the industrial hub that was later established as the city of Athens, and Sandy Creek Nature Center featuring 225 acres of woodlands and wetlands with over 4 miles of trails, an Education & Visitor Center, a circa 1815 log house, and several wildlife observation areas.
Anna Forrester is an editor and a creative person based in Athens, GA who is interested in artistic service to her community, progressive causes, and the environment. Her work revolves around mapmaking, outdoorscapes, place portraits, local and regional illustrations, and long-distance foot travel. Stylistically, her techniques are influenced by her academic background in renaissance English literature: she loves working in simple, fine-line illustrations, derivative of early modern woodcuts and also in densely stylized maps, characteristic of 17th-century cartography.
Forrester's experiences on long trails inform her art, especially in creative contributions to the Southeast and, generally, to communities that have not been thoroughly represented or funded in the outdoors.
