When you walk into ADD Drug in the heart of Five Points in Athens, GA you are stepping back in time. Founded by Jim Horton in 1961 and purchased by Kevin Florence in 2012, it is a prescription and compounding pharmacy, as well as a US Post Office, retail store, and at the heart of it all, a lunch counter serving shakes, malts, burgers, fried bologna sandwiches, tuna salad, pimento cheese & other classics.

When the old-fashioned soda fountain-lunch counter opened one could sit shoulder to shoulder with students, locals, musicians, professors, neighbors and even a UGA football player or coach. All these decades later, ADD is nearly unchanged, still serving as a community meeting place - an institution.

The experience is amazingly familiar in a comforting way, and Kevin Florence says that's exactly the point. “If you went to school here 30 years ago and ate here and you come in, you’re going to find it hasn’t changed. We don’t mess around with it much.” Kevin says, “It is very rewarding to feel like you’re part of the community and not just a person handing out pills. My favorite times are hearing people talk about how they came to the lunch counter some many years ago or seeing old friends catch up with each other. It keeps a healthy perspective on why we are here and the role we serve.”

Jamie Calkin's signature style - vibrant colors against a white background with loose black ink outlines - is instantly recognizable. A "mostly self-taught artist" (his words), Calkin began selling his playful renditions of Athens landmarks in 2001 - and today, expands to all of Georgia and beyond, painting scenes from other schools, cities, and various special locations, bringing local surroundings to life.
