In 1976, at the age of 59, Reverend Howard Finster received a vision from God to create 5,000 sacred works of art. After completing this number in 1985, he continued, producing 46,991 works before his passing in 2001. Finster often related the story of how he came to be an artist. "One day I dipped my finger in some white paint and picked it up, and when I picked it up, it formed a face before I ever seen a face...and there was a feeling just came over me and said, âPaint sacred art.â I said âLord, I can't paint. I don't have no education in that.ââ
At his core, Howard Finster was a Baptist preacher. Every step one takes in his historic art environment, Paradise Garden, there is evidence of his mission to spread "The Word" all over the world. Central in the Garden is the five-story Worldâs Folk Art Church, which is a physical manifestation of the mansions Finster saw in his visions. Today, Paradise Garden Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is responsible for the preservation of the four-acre art environment on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Paradise Garden Foundation board fundraises to operate and rehabilitate Paradise Garden. The Garden is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, year-round. Three Airbnbs located in Paradise Garden provide a unique one-of-a-kind experience for everyone who enjoys them. Paradise Garden Art & Learning Center serves the region hosting school groups, children's art camps, and adult art and learning classes. "My Garden is a way for me to get my message out all over the world...someday, sometime, people on this planet are going to realize that they need what Howard Finsterâs got, whether itâs religion, whether itâs art or whether itâs building a Garden." -Howard Finster
