Planet Nursery by Noraa James - 500 piece jigsaw puzzle
Noraa James’ work explores afro-surrealism and afro-futurism as a medium of reverence to his ancestors as well as a series of “visual love letters to the highly melanated people of today and tomorrow.” The central figure in Planet Nursery (top half) is a portrayal of an “ancestor of cosmic proportion through its relation to other celestial bodies, that they are both an authority and embodiment of.”
James was born 1989 in Rapid City, South Dakota, raised in 757 Virginia and is presently in Mérida, México. Along the way, he moved to Athens, GA for a position as graphic designer and photographer with the University of Georgia. Athens “has a special place in my heart,” says James. While in town he worked along with other artist colleagues in a collective studio, and helped organize exhibitions as well as an artist residency. In all of his art, Noraa James is driven to create “portrayals of Black people with a divine sense of esteem, mythos and golden touch to increase the positive representations of, and to celebrate deeply-pigmented individuals, who have historically been targets of contemptuous perception.”
Planet Nursery (40 x 35 inches, digital on vinyl canvas) was painted on December 2020 and was part of the installation, "Window Works" Lyndon House Gallery, Athens, GA 2020-2021
