Vernon Thornsberry paints what he sees daily. His painting, The Grit, features the world-famous restaurant where he bakes cakes and washes dishes. Beyond just painting what he sees, Vernon is a visual narrator. – "I like to tell stories. I like to take the foreground or the subject up front and make you look beyond it...and when you look over it you are looking into a story", he explains. "So, it's real but it's also imaginary." In The Grit, Thornsberry provides a rich scene that not only spills out of the back of the iconic building, but also features regular customers, restaurant employees and even himself holding a mop. Since his move to Athens, GA in 1986, Vernon Thornsberry has been part of every scene in town. He plays jazz at the clubs, has published poetry books, delivers Jittery Joe's coffee, and is a baker at one of Athens' most revered institutions. At the forefront, he’s sure to say that he's an artist first, "I wash dishes and bake cakes” ...but art? "That is my main focus." Although Thornsberry is largely self-taught, early in his artistic life, noted photographer and artist George Dureau mentored and supported him in the formidable mosaic that is New Orleans, Louisiana. These days, Vernon is a force of nature and a steady presence in Athens.
